Construction Site Portable Toilet Rental Requirements & Regulations
Are Porta Potties Required on Construction Sites?
Portable restroom and sanitation equipment rentals are a must-have for any construction site. Whether you’re building a new home, renovating an existing one, or undertaking some other large-scale construction project, you’ll need to make sure that your workers have access to clean bathrooms. OSHA requires employers to provide all workers with sanitary and easily accessible toilet facilities. Keep in mind that restroom access needs may vary from worker to worker, and may be affected by medications, fluid intake, air temperature and other factors.
What are the OSHA Regulations for Portable Restrooms & Sanitation Equipment on Construction Sites?

OSHA regulations state that there must be at least one portable toilet per 10 people using it at any given time during construction activities onsite; however, there can be more than one toilet per 10 people if necessary (such as when there are days without rain but lots of traffic on site). In general, it is required that one toilet and one urinal be provided for every 25 workers, or 20 workers if the employer provides an additional toilet facility for women. However, this applies only to the areas where there are no permanent toilets available. In situations where permanent toilets are available in other parts of the facility, these requirements do not apply.
Best Practices for Portable Toilets for Workers on Construction Sites
It goes without saying that a sanitary and healthy workplace promotes productivity in the workplace and ensures the health and welfare of workers. Some best practices that you can use for guidance when renting portable restrooms for a construction site are:
- Toilets should provide privacy, including locking systems
- Toilets should be no more than 10 minutes from where workers are assigned to work
- It is important that toilet facilities be cleaned often enough to meet workers’ health and sanitation needs. Employers should set a routine servicing schedule for cleaning, waste removal, and replenishment of supplies. (Patriot Portable Restrooms has got you covered here 😉 )
- Toilets should be well lit, ventilated, and in a secure area.
- Note: OSHA’s Sanitation Standard for Construction contains requirements for washing facilities where workers are engaged in the application of paints, coatings, herbicides, or insecticides, or in other operations where contaminants may be harmful to workers.
